image: an old friend recently returned from Japan and sent this photo. Here he stands at a Zen monastery, smack centre under a huge brass bell. Just imagine if some monk were to come along and, with the tree-trunk-size clapper, were to strike the bell. I haven’t asked whether standing there helped him in finding wisdom.
