“May this change you.”

An interesting undertaking, this re-connecting with people of the past (see post). Several people have shared their stories with me, off-line. May all beings be enriched by your courageous acts.

My initial experience was marked by procrastination. Why the reluctance? Afraid of rejection, embarrassed for neglecting the other, worried about the response? Then a call from a long-ago neighbour, “I’m taking up your invitation to contact people I’ve lost touch with. How are you?” This I had not expected, that someone might reach out to me. Especially since I tended to feel inadequate in his presence. His gesture touched my heart and begun a melting within. Thank you.

Thus encouraged I phoned two people I hadn’t spoken with in eight years. We used to distance-run, share meals and family gatherings. An unannounced call on a Sunday; perhaps a letter would have been the polite thing. Their heartfelt response dissolved all worries. Thank you. I also sent a card to someone I used to live and travel with. How will it be received? Let go of expectations! Intention and effort matter more than outcome.

Lines from from John O’Donohue —

May you be blessed with good friends.
May you learn to be a good friend to yourself.
May you be able to journey to that place in your soul where
there is great love, warmth, feeling, and forgiveness.
May this change you.
May it transfigure that which is negative, distant, or cold in you.

    Prayer for Today

    May all beings…
    …Occasionally experience loving kindness.
…Have at least fleetiing experiences of being safe from inner and outer dangers.
…Have moments of being well in body and mind.
…Have a modicum of happiness and ease.

It was the other person who, not having my phone number, emailed me 19 years after we last spoke to express his regrets with the way in which we had parted. Fast forward almost 7 months later and we are now happily together again in a very loving and committed relationship, living fully each moment of our remaining days. This did change me and “May This Change You” too.
