x is the new y

Anyone reading my recent posts might think that I’m preoccupied with death and dying. Not so. Being with people who’re terminally ill or near death allows me to be of service (which is my vow) and always leads to unexpected learning (never too late).

Today, on the light side, I’d like to touch on something that makes me cringe: the overuse and misuse of certain words. They creep into everyday speech from TV, news-speak, pop music, professional sports, and social media. I imagine there are many which I never even hear — considering my lack of youth, television, and mobile devices — but some don’t seem to go away. Awesome, sweet, and totally come to mind.

Along comes a List of Banished Words to raise our awareness. It includes–

amazing
blow back
man cave
baby bump
ginormous
pet parent
the new normal

to which I add–

friend (verb)
meetup (noun)
it’s all good
24/7
moving forward
it is what it is
